As part of its Along the Silk Road series, CNN has dedicated an episode to the city of Shaki in northwest Azerbaijan. The series explores the historic Silk Road, a 4,000 mile trade route connecting Asia and Europe; examining the export-driven economies of countries with large reserves of natural resources identified as regions that are expected to experience rapid growth over the next 25 years.

Described as the ‘market centre on the silk route’, the city of Shaki linked Daghestan, Russia, to the northern trade routes through the Caucasus.


On 7 December, David Parry, the renowned author, dramaturge and Chair, Gruntler’s Theatre gave a presentation to an audience of over 50 people at Pushkin House, London, entitled In the Footsteps of Odin, sponsored by The European Azerbaijan Society. During this, he examined the legends surrounding Odin, the leading Norse God, from a wide variety of mythic, historical, musical and literary perspectives.


Tilmann Grawe ranks amongst the foremost Paris-based fashion designers of the past 20 years. His creations have graced, amongst others, Lady Gaga, Aishwarya Rai and Lara Fabian. Tilmann has become renowned for ready-to-wear garments that enhance femininity, combining classicism and new technologies, and they incorporate such unusual materials as lizard skin and ostrich feathers. He has now collaborated on a unique charity project, commissioned by the French office of The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS), raising €1800 for UNICEF.


The latest episode of the BBC World Service radio programme From Our Own Correspondent features a report about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Damien McGuinness reports from the front line from the Azerbaijani side of the border.

All artists are invited to submit their works for exhibition at the Gabala International Art Exhibition, which will take place at the Qafqaz Riverside Hotel, Gabala, Azerbaijan from 18–19 December 2012.

The theme of this year’s exhibition will be Melody of Portraits, focusing on paintings representing any type of musical instruments, musicians, or emotional responses to music.


Karl-Georg Wellmann MP, member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the largest party in the Bundestag, has made the following statement (translated from German): “The German Bundestag supports the fulfillment of the resolutions concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as outlined by the UN, EC and OSCE. We support all efforts towards achieving peaceful conflict resolution across the whole region. We endorse peace and stability in the entire South Caucasus.


Tilmann Grawe, the famed Paris-based fashion designer, has created the striking Ulduz Buta doll, commissioned by TEAS France. This will be auctioned on 3 December at the Petit Palais, Paris, during the tenth UNICEF Les Frimousses de Créateurs event to facilitate the vaccination of children in Darfur, Sudan. This auction features dolls that have been decorated by some of the world’s leading fashion designers.

Baku, Azerbaijan

This international symposium was jointly organised in Baku by TEAS and the Paris-based Yahad-In Unum research organisation. It began with introductions by Tale Heydarov, Chairman and Founder, TEAS and Ali Hasanov, Head, Socio-Political Department, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration. Keynote papers were delivered by Father Patrick Desbois, President, Yahad-In Unum and Paul Shapiro, Director, Centre for Advanced Holocaust Studies, US Holocaust Memorial Museum.


On 18 October 2012, Azerbaijanis around the world commemorate the 21st anniversary of regaining independence from the Soviet Union. Based on the declaration dating back to when Azerbaijan’s National Council first gained its independence on 28 May 1918, this Constitutional Act specified the basic principles of the state, together with the political and economic structure of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.

Nationwide voting took place on 29 December 1991, when the Azerbaijani people unanimously voted for state independence.


A major Job Fair for overseas-educated Azerbaijanis will be held at the Baku Business Centre (National Boulevard) on 20 October 2012, opening at 11am.

Up to 50 national and foreign companies, such as SOCAR, BP Azerbaijan, Nobel Oil, the Azerbaijan Investment Company, Azercell, Azerfon, Bakcell, the Bank of Baku, Bank Nikoil, Azersun, ZQAN Holding, Nurgun Holding, Holcim, Caspian Fish, Hilton, JW Absheron, UniBank, Deloitte & Touch, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, R.I.S.K will be represented at the Fair.
