On 18 September, the Google homepage in Azerbaijan is commemorating the 128th anniversary of the birth of composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, who was born in the village of Aghjabadi in Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh, which is currently under illegal Armenian occupation. He synthesised both the ashiq and mugham genres with western classical music, and this led him to compose Leyli and Majnun in 1908, the first opera of the Muslim East.


The European Azerbaijan School (EAS) in Baku, established by The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) in 2011, has been admitted to membership of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). This is a global membership organisation that promotes and supports professional development among international schools, individuals and educational organisations, and positions EAS alongside some of the most renowned international educational establishments.

Azerbaijan is fast becoming recognised as a major player in the healthcare industry, according to a report by analyst and consulting firm, Frost & Sullivan.

The report states that the growth of Azerbaijan’s healthcare industry is a result of the Azerbaijani Government’s continued healthcare reform and targeted investment in the sector. Azerbaijan’s healthcare budget has been increased 10 times in the past decade and the country's healthcare infrastructure widely developed, with over 500 healthcare facilities being constructed or redeveloped during that period.

A meeting took place on 21 June 2013 in Brussels between Herman Van Rompuy, President, European Council, and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. Mr Van Rompuy shared his “satisfaction” with the progress achieved on constructing the Southern Gas Corridor, which will bring Caspian and Central Asian resources direct to Europe, ensuring energy security for the future.


Speaking at the Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition 2013 on 4 June, former UK energy minister, Charles Hendry delivered a personal message of congratulations from UK Prime Minister David Cameron to the people of Azerbaijan.


During his visit to Baku on 3 May, Štefan Füle, European Commissioner responsible for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, stated that the European Union (EU) remains committed to the further development of bilateral relations with Azerbaijan.


The anti-corruption measures implemented by the Azerbaijani Government have been welcomed in a report released by the Group States Against Corruption (GRECO). GRECO, established in 1999 by the Council of Europe, monitors states’ compliance with the organisation’s anti-corruption standards.


On 17 December 2012, the Cooperation Council between the European Union (EU) and Azerbaijan held its thirteenth meeting in Brussels, with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remaining top priority for both parties.
